Analysing The Job Advert

1. Skills and Experience:
Be sure to highlight the specific skills and experience which are identified in the Job Advert and bring these out in your application letter - only if you truely possess them. Remember do not attempt to convey you have the necessary skills if you do not as this will be found out at interview stage.

2. Sociable / Unsociable Hours:
Be certain that you can ascertain this information and know the type of working hours which are involved in the role. If hours are unsociable ie shift/nights etc then it will be worth considering how you will fit this into your life, how you are going to get there, is there a bus route, will you be driving, does it fit with childcare requirements, is it possible for you to work these hours?

3. Age:
Some adverts will display an age range - do not automatically rule yourself our of the running if you are perhaps outside the age range. They will also be looking for other information and qualities and your skills and experience are important. Don't think of yourself as too old or too young.

4. Read Through The Lines
There are always hidden extras mentioned in a Job Advert. Make sre you understand what is behind these. eg
"......ability to work under pressure" may mean - aving to meet tight deadlines, working in a busy shop on your own, coping with a variety of tasks, working long hours, working alone on busy projects with little input from management.

".....strong communication skills" - Written or Oral? In person or by telephone? Speaking to large groups of small teams or individuals? Presentations? Meetings with senior managemet?

"......commission only" - this will lead you in the direction of high pressure sales. You will be paid entirely on your own efforts. Find out as much as you can on what you can expect to earn with this company. Be sure that this is the type of work that you want - it can be quite lonely at times and very pressurised.

".....equal opportunities employer" - can mean flexible hours, childcare facilities, flexible times to suit school hours, career breaks.

5. Qualifications:
If you have a strong background based on experience, don't be put off by qualification requirements as your experience can carry you. The company is looking for someone who can do the job - not list all their qualifications etc etc.

Self Assessment Exercise

SELF ASSESSMENT

Take a piece of paper and draw 4 columns across the page with the following headings:
  1. Position Held
  2. Skills Acquired
  3. What I Liked about this position
  4. What I Disliked about this position

STEP ONE:
Write down all job positions which you have held in the past - Job Title and Company Name

STEP TWO:
Working with one position at a time - Identify all skills learned and mastered in each position.
When compelted go back over this list and highlight the skills which you enjoyed doing and which you consistently performed well.

STEP THREE:
In a separate column write down all the things which you liked about each position.

STEP FOUR:
In column 4, now write down all the things which you disliked about each position.

In addition to this exercise you could also take a look at the magazines or newspapers and scan through the job/apointments section and pick out any or all jobs which may appeal to you. Now take a look at the above sheet which you have completed and compare your highlighted skills with those which are required in the job sepcifications you have discovered of interest to you.

This exercise will help you to identify your unique selling points which will help you to sell yourself going forward.

I hope you enjoy this exercise! :-)
